On Saturday, June 13, 2020, Deon Kevin Johnson became the 11th Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Missouri in a small service at Christ Church Cathedral in St. Louis.
Around 25 people gathered in-person, wearing face masks, practicing social distancing (as much as possible), for the service. More than 700 people watched the service as it was streamed live on Facebook, and thousands more have engaged online since the live event.
Bishop Marty, speaking on the behalf of the Episcopal churches of West Missouri, said, “I congratulate Bishop Johnson and our brothers and sisters in the Episcopal Diocese of Missouri on his consecration as 11th Bishop of Missouri, and I look forward to partnering with the Church’s newest bishop and the members of The Diocese of Missouri to share the Gospel message of love and to minister to the cities, towns, and rural communities of the state where we reside.”
Bishop Deon was consecrated by the Rt. Rev. George Wayne Smith, who served as chief consecrator of the ordination. He was joined by the Rt. Rev. Jennifer Baskerville-Burrows, Bishop of the Diocese of Indianapolis; the Rt. Rev. Phoebe Roaf, Bishop of West Tennessee; and the Rt. Rev. Bonnie Perry, Bishop of Michigan.
