Even in a COVID-19 world we can creatively bring children (and families) from all over the diocese together – so let’s do Backyard VBS!

Summer is a great time to explore God’s Wondrous Creation! Adaptable for children from three years old to 6th grade, backyard VBS takes place over the course of three evenings following a simple format using materials that are ready to go … just open the packet you receive in the mail!

Traditionally, VBS encourages us to include our friends from the neighborhood or school. Whether or not they continue to come is not the point, we are offering an experience of Christian community. If it’s possible to safely do so, bring two to four families together for fellowship with a purpose. Get creative — invite neighbors, get the kids together from church, rotate between homes, take turns leading, encourage older youth to help, meet on driveways, or in the park. Mum’s the word, but this might just be a form of clandestine evangelism.

Sign up to receive the following through by mail:

  • An invitation to an Introductory Zoom session Godly Play story that kicks off activities. These intro sessions will be offered on June 15, June 29 and July 13 beginning at 7 pm.
  • Step-by-step instructions, templates, scripts and material lists that cover three nights of sessions. You receive stories, reflections, crafts, worship experiences, physical activities or games, and a ideas for creating a theme-related snack.

God’s Wondrous Creation can be done three nights in a row or once a week!

P.S. Linda M, we’re hoping you see this post! Although attempts to reach you by email came back undeliverable and we were unable to contact you by another means we’re hoping you will be able to join one of the two remaining VBS dates! The form has been corrected to add required fields so this can be avoided going forward and we appreciate your understanding.

Kim Snodgrass is Assistant to the Bishop for Christian Formation.
